How Fruits and Veggies Impact Your Vision

Did you know that what you eat affects your eye health? Our Fairlawn optometry center, Resident Eye Care Associates, takes a holistic approach to treating your eyes. Our optometrists know that your diet plays an important role in your eye health.

How Fruits and Veggies Benefit You

While carrots are the first food that comes to mind when you think about nutrition and eye health, there are a variety of foods that can keep your peepers in tip-top shape. Cold water fish are chock full of omega-3 fatty acids, which can help to protect your eyes from age-related deterioration over time. A high-quality fish oil supplement (typically sold in capsule form) can also do the trick if you aren’t a fan of seafood. While eggs are great for building lean muscle, they’re also great for your eyes! They’re packed with vitamin A, which helps protect eyes against dry eyes and vision loss. Leafy greens such as kale, Swiss chard, and spinach contain high levels of lutein and zeaxanthin, both of which can help protect your eyes against cataracts and macular degeneration.

Not sure how to convince your family to eat more greens? Try tossing them in olive oil, salt, and pepper, and then roasting in the oven under high heat until they’re crisp and crunchy. Eating a diet with substantial whole grains (think oats, quinoa, and barley) can also help protect eyes against macular degeneration. This swap is easy to make- just switch out whole grains for carby pastas and cereals. Top off those oats with some delicious fresh orange slices, as citrus fruits high in vitamin C are also known for protecting eye health.
